However, ecommerce keyword research varies slightly from conventional keyword research. You’ll need to concentrate on both informational and commercial keywords to enhance your SEO strategy. You’ll need to concentrate on both top-of-the-funnel and bottom-of-the-funnel keywords:

1. Brainstorm to create a list of seed keywords, and basic keyword ideas. Seed keywords are the primary terms, products, or ideas that come to mind when you think about your business and products.

For instance, if you sell yoga mats, your seed keywords could be “yoga mat,” “yoga equipment,” and “yoga accessories.” These keywords are the foundation for your keyword research and can help you generate a more extensive list of relevant keywords.  

2.  Generate a list of relevant keywords ideas

After you have created a list of seed keywords, you can use them as a starting point to discover an extensive list of potential keyword ideas. 

For more advanced keyword research, you’ll need a paid SEO tool. The most popular are Ahrefs and SEMRush.

These tools provide the ability to research and analyze keywords en masse.  As you find new terms that you want to target, you can add them to your seed keyword list. This way, you can expand your list of keywords and ensure that you’re targeting the most relevant and profitable ones for your ecommerce business.

The autocomplete suggestions that appear when you’re searching for something can be an excellent source for keyword ideas, particularly if you already have some fundamental keywords in mind.

Competition refers to the number of websites that are trying to rank for the same keyword. Keywords with high competition are usually more challenging to rank for, and it may take more time and resources to achieve a high ranking.

Relevancy refers to how closely a keyword aligns with the content and purpose of your website. Using relevant keywords ensures that your website attracts the right audience interested in your products or services.

Intent refers to the purpose or motivation behind a particular search query. 

4. Identify keywords with transactional intent 

After conducting initial keyword research, you can filter the keywords with the highest transactional intent. Using keywords with buyer intent, such as “buy,” “order,” or “purchase,” can help drive more sales and revenue for your ecommerce business. 

Select keywords that are likely to generate the most traffic and sales for your business and optimize your product descriptions and other content accordingly.  

5.  Create keyword clusters

This process will help you use your keywords strategically by combining related keywords into a single cluster. Then you can target all of the keywords in that cluster on a single page rather than creating a separate page for each.

For instance, “thick yoga mats” and “extra thick yoga mats” are almost similar.

It makes sense to optimize one page on your website for both terms.
